South Korea's KSS-III submarine program
Interview with Captain Choi on the KSS-III submarine program of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy, during the Combined Naval Event (CNE) 2024.
=====================
Captain Choi Sangdeok is the Director of the KSS-III program group at the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
The KSS-III was the first submarine designed and built independently in the Republic of Korea. When surfaced, the KSS-III displaces 3,300 tonnes with dimensions of 83.3×9.6×7.62m. It is equipped with an AIP (Air Independent Propulsion) system using fuel cell. The underwater speed is 20 knots. KSS-III is armed with six 533.4mm tubes for heavy torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles and bottom mines. In addition - as the first ‘Western’ conventional submarine - the class received hull-mounted vertical launchers for SLBM (Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles) with conventional warheads.

    Can there still be made a difference between ''underwater-priority'' and ''air defence priority'' ? Every time, our Navies (the German Navy as well is cooperating with the Netherlands) make this difference, I ask myself: Can our vessels make a choice out at sea, as if they were sitting at a green table, smoking cigars and deciding: ''This is not our enemy, because he is attacking underwater....''? Of course I exaggerated this example, but the drones will be everywhere in the future - so every Frigate or Corvette, the Tank-Vessel shown here... They ALL must be capable for air defense AND for torpedo-/submarine-defense... Asked the other way round: How ''differently specialized'' ships still can be in the close future ?

    Interesting news that Canada is considering KSS-3 and a serious bid is being prepared. I'd also like to see Canada nudge towards the German Type 212CD. Both good potential choices, it would seem. However, I am curious though, how the South Korean sub would address the issue of how different Canada's defense needs are than South Korea's. Whatever we get would have to have extremely long range and the battle space would be across the deep oceans not just defending against local threats. Also, having the capability to operate under the Arctic ice is a major consideration for Canada, but not South Korea. In that respect, if the Type 212CD is being built for Norway, they will have the Arctic capability issue dealt with for them already. One plus for the South Koreans if they can transfer some of the shipbuilding or refit capabilities to Canada for our use, is that it could function as a backup location for their own navy needs, if their facilities were to fall under attack by North Korean or China. So I guess this will be what the RCN has to consider in any bid. I hope the RCN does not let itself get steered into some AUKUS sort of nuclear boondoggle.

    South Korea has top-class shipbuilding capabilities, and has deliberately acquired improved technology & capability for, first, surface warships (corvettes, frigates, destroyers, LPDs, and next small aircraft carrier). On the submarine side, South Korea proceeded from Germany's U-209 (KSS 1) and U-214 (KSS 2) to indigenous KSS 3 (which carries cruise missiles). Very impressive.

    I believe the U.S does not want us poking around the high arctic ocean with nuclear powered subs and 3 out of the 4 parties in Canadian parliament don't want them either, A26 subs from SAAB would have been my choice with the modern AIP system, and get them to throw in some RBS15 mark 4 missiles and then buy some Oerliken 35 Millennium guns and Sea ranger 20mm guns for the Kingston Class giving you some punchy patrol boats.

    Lithium-ion batteries are only in a transitional phase, will we move to solid-state batteries, or will we still go for nuclear power? KR-san is assuming that KSS-III Batch 3 will be nuclear power. Good luck! Oh, by the way, in Japan, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which you are promoting as a "war criminal company," is developing a mini nuclear power plant that can run for 25 years without fuel. What will you do, KR-san?

      S.Korea is also developing SME reactors for marine use. Also, Japan cannot produce such submarine as they have been promising so far. @@ytn00b3 Well, go for it! That conceit will come back to haunt you in the form of an accident involving your own submarine that is not functioning properly. When will they be able to build a submarine that will not cause trouble and be criticized by the world like the Indonesian submarine accident? ? ? *The "Nangara" submarine was manufactured in West Germany. It was manufactured in 1978 as one of the Type 209 submarine series and incorporated into the Indonesian Navy in 1981. After that, from 2010, it was improved over a period of two years at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (now Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd.). The Korean company that modernized Indonesia's submarines is Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. This company made its own improvements to the Type 209 submarine (Nagapasha-class submarine) introduced by Indonesia. Specifically, instead of the original from the developer, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering created a derivative of the Type 209/1400 type with its own improvements. A contract was signed in 2019 to introduce three additional improved submarines. However, payments have not progressed and it is unclear whether the contract will be implemented. Against this background, it has been reported that Indonesia is considering inviting experts from Europe to verify the technical reliability and actual capabilities of the Nagaparsha-class submarines. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering is a major Korean shipbuilding company that builds and refurbishes not only submarines but also various types of ships. In this way, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering can be said to be a company with the technical capabilities to modernize and refurbish submarines. However, the performance and reliability of the submarines will need to be evaluated and verified by experts. Attention is focused on future developments in this regard.

    I am ex RAN and still have friends serving, they are not impressed with the Navantia ships due to the number of defects, but then they are only engineering sailors so what would they know, yet the Meko (ANZAC) are now being paid of due to them being close to 30 years old.
